The Benefits of RGP Contact LensesWhat are RGP contact lenses? These are the new breed of hard contact lenses, that unlike the old version of hard contact lenses, are rigid gas permeable. So, what does that mean? Well, simply put RGP contact lenses allow gases, most importantly oxygen, to pass through to the eye. In fact, RGP contact lenses allow more oxygen to the eye than soft contact lenses. What are the benefits of wearing RGP contact lenses?Well one of the obvious benefits is the fact that these contact lenses last longer than soft contact lenses. RGP contact lenses may cost more upfront, but in the end the lack of replacement expenses makes up for the initial cost. RGP contact lenses are also effective in keeping their shape. This gives you a clearer, sharper view that lasts even when blinking. However, this is also the reason most people are not currently wearing RGP contact lenses. You see, your eyes must adapt to the shape of the lenses before becoming comfortable. Soft contacts do not require this adjustment as they mold to your eye. However, cleaning RGP contact lenses are actually easier than cleaning soft contact lenses assuming the lenses are not too old. You see, unlike soft contact lenses, RGP contact lenses resist protein build up and other deposits. The question ultimately comes down to two aspects; clarity or comfort. RGP contact lenses offer clearer vision actually making it the only choice for some conditions such as astigmatisms that have not been improved by other lenses. However, the adjustment period and the restriction of having to wear them every day can be too much trouble for individuals who value comfort.
