Understanding Laser Eye SurgeryEven if you don't have vision problems, you may have asked the question, what is laser eye surgery? The answer is simple yet complex at the same time. Laser eye surgery is, obviously, surgery performed on the eyes with a laser, but what is laser eye surgery for? Well, it's to correct what are referred to as refractive errors. Refractive errors such as myopia, also known as nearsightedness, hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, and astigmatism, can all be corrected with laser eye surgery. The laser is used to permanently change the shape of the cornea and reduce or eliminate a persons need for glasses and contacts. There are several different types of laser eye surgeries and also a number of different lasers that have been approved by the FDA for use in refractive surgery. The type of refractive error you have as well as many other factors will be used by your surgeon to determine which procedure is best for you. Depending on which procedure you have, it can be quick and painless, but just as with any surgery, there can be complications. In my own opinion, the rewards greatly outweigh the possible risks. Advances in technology over the last decade have decreased many of the risks associated with laser eye surgery. Again, there are several factors that may lead to complications and those will be taken into consideration by your surgeon as well, providing you have chosen the surgeon wisely. Experience is key when hiring a surgeon to perform your laser eye surgery.
