Episcleritis and contact lensesIs there a Link Between Episcleritis and Contact lenses?Research shows that there appears to be a link between episcleritis and contact lenses. However, it is not the soft contact lenses that cause the problem. Rather it is the continuous wearing of the lenses that appears to cause the connection between episcleritis and contact lenses. Episcleritis is a condition of the eye that causes redness and tenderness. It can be a chronic condition and is treated with topical steroids or oral non-steriods. It is not infectious but may threaten vision, and women usually suffer from episcleritis more than men. However, most cases of episcleritis clear up by themselves, and only require treatment when discomfort or tenderness appears. Because eye redness is one of the primary symptoms of episcleritis it is important to remember that several other things can cause redness of the eye and not just episcleritis. Lens or solution allergies, conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, and lenses that don't fit correctly or are defective can also cause eye redness. Any type of eye redness tells the contact lens user that there is a problem. It is a signal or a symptom of an underlying problem and the contact lens wearer should see their ophthalmologist so that the problem can be addressed. Contact lens users should not assume that because there appears to be a link between episcleritis and contact lenses that their eye redness is indeed caused by episcleritis. Since many other diseases of the eye also cause eye redness, a visit to the ophthalmologist is the only accurate way to determine its cause.
