Corrective Contact LensThe problem of low or poor vision is one that has been with human beings for as long as there have been human beings; the "cure" of the corrective contact lens has been in process since the mid 1600s, when famous French philosopher/mathematician first dreamed up the idea of putting a corrective lens directly on the eye's surface. In 1887, physician Adolf Eugen Fick made Descartes' idea a reality with a heavy glass lens that was, unfortunately for his patients, difficult to fit, uncomfortable, and unwieldy in the extreme. A truly wearable corrective contact lens was finally invented almost 75 years later by Otto Wichterle, a Czech chemist whose soft contact lens was a welcome alternative to those afflicted with poor vision. Today's contact lenses, worn by roughly 23 million people, can treat a wide variety of refractive errors, from nearsightedness (myopia) to farsightedness (hyperopia) to astigmatism (irregularly shaped cornea). They come in rigid, gas permeable formats, made of a hard plastic nonetheless lets oxygen through to the surface of the eye; and soft, pliable plastic, or hydrophilic lenses, which mold to the surface of the eye. Soft contacts are also available in various shades and intensities of pigment to visibly alter the eye color of the wearer. In addition, with soft contacts, you generally have the option to choose the durability of the lens: some brands you throw away after a week, some after a month or two, some you reuse for longer periods of time. Both hard and soft contacts are said to "float" on a layer of tears between the cornea and the surface of the corrective contact lens. Whatever "flavor" of contact you choose, just be glad that you live in an age where your choice for corrective contact lens extends past a heavy glass disk!
