Contact Lenses in Canada are Growing in PopularityThe use of contact lenses in Canada and the United States is on the rise. It's hard to imagine that this modern day convenience was once unavailable. In fact, it was back in 1949 that one of the contact lens pioneers, Adolph Mueller-Welt, left Germany to begin the production of contact lenses in Canada for the United States and Canadian markets. Where contact lenses used to be rigid discs with laborious cleaning demands, we see many options today. There are soft as well as rigid lenses, disposable lenses (intended for both daily and extended wear use), cosmetic colored lenses, bifocal lenses, and even UV light blocking lenses. Cosmetic lenses, that change both eye color and appearance, are also increasing in popularity. In the U.S., the FDA warns consumers against wearing any contact lenses acquired without a prescription. And where non-corrective cosmetic contact lenses in Canada can be purchased over-the-counter, consumers are warned of potential safety concerns when lenses have not been fitted properly by an eye care professional. It is important to follow some general rules as a contact lens wearer. Wash your hands with soap and water before handling your lenses. Do not swim in your lenses. They can either float out of your eyes or absorb chemicals (i.e. chlorinated pool). Apply makeup after your contacts are in (and use water-soluble products), and of course, see your eye doctor immediately if any problems occur. It's difficult to comprehend how these little bits of plastic correct vision. Yet they rest on the cornea, float on a thin layer of tears, and actually help the eye to focus light properly. With the right care and professional guidance, they provide an easy way to view the world.
