Implications of Contact Lenses and Dry Eyes

If you are concerned about contact lenses and dry eyes, you simply need to do some research to find out more information. Contact lenses and dry eyes are not a cause and result, but lenses can exacerbate symptoms of dry eyes.

Generally, dry eyes are caused because the eye produces fewer tears as we age. Because of this, eyes have a tendency to become dryer, which can be exacerbated by wearing contact lenses, taking certain prescriptions, exposure to certain environmental elements, and the like. Although there is no cure for dry eyes, there are measures you can take to make sure the tissues in your eyes are not harmed. Using artificial tears will help your eye feel less dry and more comfortable throughout the day. However, if you have severe dry eye you may be required to use an ointment at bedtime to lubricate the eye. In rare cases when artificial tears and the ointment does not achieve positive results for dry eye sufferers, small plugs are inserted into the tear ducts to slow the loss of natural tears. No matter your situation, if you have dry eyes you should work with your eye doctor to make sure you treat the symptoms so you can be as comfortable as possible.

In severe cases, you may not be able to wear contact lenses. The most important thing is to attend doctor's appointments regularly, follow all instructions meticulously, and you will be able to control your dry eyes even though you won't be able to cure the problem.
