Columbus Implantable Contact Lens: An Alternative to LASIK?The Columbus Implantable Contact Lens, also known as ICL, is an alternative to LASIK surgery for individuals wanting eye correction surgery without the risks of LASIK or who do not qualify for LASIK. Columbus Implantable Contact Lens is a new procedure that helps individuals who have nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness. The surgery itself is quick and relatively painless with a short recover time. The way the Columbus Implantable Contact Lens is implanted in the eye is through a small incision. Then, the ICL is placed over the eye's actual lens in your required prescription. This is performed in both eyes, if necessary, and heals rather quickly with just the use of eye drops. The benefit of this procedure over LASIK and other laser surgeries, is that if the eye prescription of the person changes all that needs to be done is change the implantable lens. Conversely, in individuals with LASIK it is riskier to attempt additional surgeries and often times these patients end up wearing contact lenses or glasses again. Also, individuals who have had this surgery do not experience increased cloudiness, halo effects, sensitivity to light and other similar effects that are associated with LASIK surgery. Additioanlly, individuals eyesight improved to 20/20 in all cases, and even better in some. The Columbus Implantable Contact Lens is certainly a procedure to consider if you want to correct your eyesight and reduce your risks for failure. However, discuss your history with your ophthalmologist and what surgery would best benefit you before making a decision.
