Causes of Astigmatism

I recently found out that I need glasses or contact lenses to correct headaches that I've been getting with some frequency. My main problem according to the doctor I went to is that I've got a bit of astigmatism. So I've been looking into finding out the causes of astigmatism, and basically I've found out that no one really knows what the causes of astigmatism actually are.

Here are a few things I did find out though.

Astigmatism is a problem with the curvature of the eye not being uniform. It's actually a kind of ripple in your eye and it makes things appear blurry and ill-focused.

The thing that was unusual, I thought, is that it is usually something that you're born with. I haven't had any problems until recently though, so it's either gotten worse or it's just become a lot more noticeable since I've developed a bit of farsightedness as I've gotten older.

It seems that there are only a couple of things that can be done to correct the problems caused by my astigmatism. The first solution is glasses which I'm not really too keen on wearing and the second solution is hard contact lenses. I'd prefer to wear soft contacts that everyone tells me are more comfortable but apparently soft contact lenses are not really effective when it comes to correcting astigmatism. The hard contact lenses more or less force your cornea into a more uniform shape which the soft ones don't.

I hope this helps anyone looking into the causes of astigmatism, it turns out that you're just born with it so it could be something that is passed down from your parents.
