Should you Buy Colored Contact Lenses with No Prescription?
If you do not already wear contact lenses or glasses but would like to change the color of your eye, either for cosmetic purposes or for a holiday occasion like Halloween, there is a way to buy colored contact lenses with no prescription. These lenses, that do no alter or improve your ability to see, are called Plano lenses. Plano means they don't have a "power" and are therefore not classified as a medical device. However, just because you can buy colored contact lenses with no prescription doesn't mean it's a good idea, or even a safe one.
The FDA recently seized a shipment of Plano lenses that were imported into the United States because they believe the lenses "present significant risks of blindness and other eye injury if they are distributed without a prescription or without proper fitting by a qualified eye care professional."
Currently bill HR31, which asks that non-corrective, non-prescription contact lenses be classified as medical devices, is being considered by Congress. If the bill passes, then there will be no way to buy colored contact lenses with no prescription. You will have to see your eye doctor about it even if you don't have any vision problems and only wish to change your eye color for fun or cosmetic reasons. In the meantime, go ahead and search for colored contacts online. Several retailers have a large variety of colored lenses for your enjoyment.
Before choosing a color, think about what your goals are. Do you want a completely new shade that covers your original color, or do you want a subtle blending of old and new colors? Once you've figured that out, you may want to consult an eye doctor before purchasing.
